IPL...Your Questions Answered

How many treatments are required?

The number of treatments depends on the density, colour and location of the hair. Research indicates that between 20% and 30% of hair follicles are in the growing (anagen) stage at any one time, the remainder are unable to absorb light. IPL treatment is effective on the anagen hairs only, therefore multiple treatments are required. The actual number varies from one person to another. Normally a minimum of 6 treatments are required with intervals of 4 to 8 weeks between, depending on the area being treated.Extremely coarse hair, damaged follicles from years of plucking, electrolysis, waxing and hormonal problems can take longer to treat.

How long is each treatment?

Each treatment time is different depending upon the size of the area to be treated. For example a full beard may take 20 minutes and a half leg 45 minutes.

Is it possible to treat all skin and hair colours?

Dark hair on fair skin is the easiest to treat, however it is possible to treat darker skins with dark hair and light skins with medium to light hair colour providing the IPL light can differentiate between the hair colour and the skin colour. A patch test will determine your suitability for treatment.

Will it hurt?

No, it feels like a flicking action on the skin and the skin can remain slightly warm after treatment. It is always wise to keep cool on the day of treatment and apply after care as instructed.

Will I need to avoid sun light after treatment?

Yes, it is wise to avoid sun exposure for 4 weeks before and after treatment in case of skin sensitivity, this includes the use of sunbeds.

Can IPL damage skin?

No, it has been proven that IPL is good for repairing skin and is often used to rejuvenate the skin and will help ingrowing hairs and scarring.  Always follow any home care advice given by your Therapist.

I've had IPL at another salon, do I still have to have a patch test at Cedars?

Yes, all machines vary so a patch test and consultation is vital for you to have the best possible outcome.

How old must you be to start having IPL treatment?

Cedars only treat people who are over 18 with IPL. This is especially important as after puberty the hormone levels are more settled therefore improving the results of the treatment.

Can I have IPL during pregnancy?

During pregnancy it is possible for hair growth to slow down, only to speed up again afterwards. Therefore it is inadvisable to have IPL during pregnancy, however we can suggest alternative methods depending on each individuals' needs.
